Nothing hits home when you're craving a sandwich quite like a Vegan BLT! Tempeh bacon, lettuce, tomato, and avocado piled high on whole-wheat toast slathered with vegan mayo or oil-free aioli. Sign me up! This healthy vegan sandwich makes the perfect lunch or light dinner.

Nothing hits quite like the delicious combination of a BLT--aka Bacon, Lettuce, & Tomato Sandwich. Thankfully, making a vegan version of the classic couldn't be easier.
This version of the Vegan BLT is both WFPB and oil-free because I'm using tempeh bacon and an oil-free aioli. However, you could easily substitute with store-bought versions or your own favorite recipes.
I like to also add avocado slices to my BLT, so I guess this is technically a vegan BLAT. But whatever you call it, it's a dang good vegan sandwich!
For the easiest prep, I recommend making the tempeh bacon and oil-free aioli in advance. That way when it's time to make the sandwich you simply assemble and serve!

Can this be gluten-free?
Sure! You will need to use gluten-free bread. When preparing the tempeh bacon, be sure to use gluten-free tempeh and gluten-free soy sauce.
Can I make the tempeh bacon in an air fryer?
You sure can! I've got my instructions for air fryer tempeh bacon right here.
Ingredients
- whole-wheat bread: White, multi-grain, or whatever you have on hand will also be fine.
- oil-free aioli: Follow the linked instructions or use your favorite store-bought vegan mayo. Mustard also makes a great substitute.
- tempeh bacon: Make it on the skillet or in the air fryer.
- avocado: I know it's not exactly traditional, but I love it!
- tomato: Big, ripe tomatoes work best, but when I don't have those, I'll substitute with sliced cherry or Roma tomatoes.
- romaine lettuce (washed and patted dry): Any kind of greens are fine. I often use spinach or mixed greens.
*See recipe card for quantities.
Variations
- If you prefer, you can add this to a wrap instead of a sandwich.
- Instead of Romaine lettuce, you can also use mixed greens or spinach.
- Feel free to switch things up however you like! Pickled onions or cucumbers would also make a great addition to this sandwich.
Instructions
- If you are making the aioli and tempeh bacon from scratch, do that first.
- While your tempeh bacon is sizzling away in the skillet or air fryer, start assembling your ingredients! Wash and dry the lettuce and tomato.
- Toast the bread.
- Spread 1 tablespoon of vegan mayo or aioli on each piece of bread. Pile on the lettuce, tomato, avocado, and tempeh bacon on one piece of toast. Place the other piece of toast, mayo side down, onto the sandwich.
- Serve and enjoy right away or wrap in foil and add to a packed lunch.
How to serve
Serve this BLT as a quick and easy lunch or even a light dinner! It would go perfectly with a side of oven fries or vegan potato salad.
Pro-tip: Batch cook the Tempeh Bacon ahead of time and store in the refrigerator or freezer for quick vegan BLTs any time you want!
Can I make it ahead?
You can make the Tempeh Bacon and Oil-free Aioli ahead but wait to assemble the sandwich until you are either packing a lunch or ready to eat.
How to store
- Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
